Ever felt like your life was going great, and then suddenly, without warning, everything just fell apart? Maybe you’ve been there, or maybe you feel you’re there right now. Sometimes life hands us a tragedy or a setback that’s so big, it feels like nothing will ever be the same again. Believe me, I know exactly how that feels.
When Everything Changed
When I was young, my mom struggled with diabetes. She battled it for years until the day we thought things were finally turning around—she was going to have surgery that could cure her. We were hopeful, excited even. But instead of a miracle, we faced an unimaginable tragedy. After her surgery, complications arose, and suddenly, one morning, she was gone. I remember standing there in shock, feeling as if my whole world had collapsed. My mom wasn’t just sick anymore—she wasn’t there at all.
At twelve years old, it felt like life had no meaning left. Questions flooded my heart: “Why did God do this to us? Why did He have to ruin my life?” Maybe you’ve asked similar questions. Maybe you’re asking them now. And that’s okay—God can handle your toughest questions.
Hope Lost, Life Frozen
After my mom’s death, life seemed pretty pointless. I drifted into apathy. Apathy means you simply don’t care—about anything. You don’t care about the future, your goals, or even yourself. Honestly, it’s a miserable place to be. All I cared about was escaping the pain and finding a bit of temporary happiness in anything I could grasp. I didn’t realize that what I really needed was hope.
A Turnaround Moment
Years passed, and my dad remarried. My new mom, Vicki, was someone special—she had spent 15 years as a missionary to Africa, and she had faith like no one I’d met before. She saw how deeply I struggled and began to pray for me constantly. Her prayers were the start of something I never expected.
One night, exhausted and broken, I remember praying desperately, “God, I can’t do this. If anything is going to change, it has to be You who changes it.” It felt like giving up, but actually, it was the exact moment God had been waiting for. It was when I admitted I needed His strength instead of relying on my own.
But change didn’t come immediately. I spiraled again, drifting even lower. Maybe you’ve been there—thinking things are turning around only to find yourself stuck again. It was discouraging, but God wasn’t finished yet.
Finding True Hope
Eventually, an evangelist visited my church and preached a simple but life-changing series of messages about what we truly have in Jesus Christ. For the first time, I understood that my life had purpose—not just someday in heaven, but right here and now.
I discovered three incredible things during those meetings that gave me real, lasting hope:
- The Hope of His Calling Paul prayed for believers “that the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling” (Ephesians 1:18 KJV). God has called you to more than just existing—He has an amazing plan and purpose for your life right now.
- Riches in Christ God also wants us to see “the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints” (Ephesians 1:18). This means God values you so deeply that He considers you His treasured inheritance. You are special and uniquely important to Him.
- His Incredible Power Finally, Paul mentions “the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe” (Ephesians 1:19). This means the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to you every single day. This power helps you overcome whatever tragedy or difficulty you’re facing.
You Have a Mission
Here’s the bottom line: hopelessness will keep you stuck, but hope propels you forward. Jesus doesn’t just offer you a ticket to heaven—He gives you power and purpose today. No matter what you’re facing, God has an amazing plan for your life. He sees you, He loves you, and He’s ready to use your story for something incredible.
You might not see it yet, but take it from someone who has walked through deep darkness: there is hope. It’s not wishful thinking; it’s anchored in the reality of who God is and what He promises in His Word. If you’re feeling hopeless today, why not reach out to Jesus? He’s waiting to show you just how bright your future can be.
