Have you ever made a big spiritual decision—maybe committing to read your Bible daily, pray more, or turn away from sin—only to struggle just days or weeks later? It’s frustrating, isn’t it? You start strong, determined to change, but before long, you slip back into old habits. If this sounds familiar, don’t be discouraged—your decision wasn’t a promise of perfection. Your failure doesn’t mean your decision was meaningless. In fact, learning how to keep going after a setback is one of the most important lessons in the Christian life.
Why Making Decisions Matters
Some people hesitate to make spiritual commitments because they fear they won’t be able to keep them. But avoiding commitments altogether isn’t the answer. If you never set a goal, you’ll never move forward. The Bible encourages us to pursue spiritual growth:
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
James 4:8
Every decision you make for God is a step closer to Him. When you decide to walk in purity, spend more time in prayer, or surrender to God’s will, you’re realigning your life with His plan.
A Decision Is a Direction, Not Perfection
Many people think that making a decision means they have to follow through perfectly. But that’s not the case. A spiritual decision isn’t about perfection—it’s about changing direction.
Imagine a runner who stumbles during a race. Does he stop and walk off the track? No! He gets back up and keeps going. The Christian life is the same way. Just because you trip along the way doesn’t mean you should quit. When you fall, get back up, ask for God’s grace, and keep moving forward.
Maybe you committed to give up a certain sin, but you’ve struggled with temptation. Maybe you planned to spend time with God every morning, but you’ve missed a few days. Don’t let failure convince you to give up altogether. Instead, refocus and start again.
How to Keep Going After You Fail
If you’ve struggled to keep a spiritual commitment, here are a few steps to help you get back on track:
- Recognize Where You Fell
Be honest with yourself and with God. Did you rely too much on your own strength? Were you inconsistent in seeking His help? Acknowledge where you went wrong so you can move forward. - Remember Why You Made the Commitment
What led you to make this decision in the first place? Maybe you felt convicted about a sin. Maybe you saw a need for more spiritual discipline in your life. Revisit that moment and let it rekindle your desire to grow. - Depend on God, Not Yourself
One of the biggest reasons people fail in their commitments is that they try to do it in their own strength. But real change comes from depending on God. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). If you’ve been trying to live for God without relying on His power, it’s no wonder you’ve struggled! Instead of relying on willpower, lean on Him through prayer, His Word, and the Holy Spirit. - Start Again with a Fresh Perspective
The enemy wants you to believe that because you failed, your commitment was useless. That’s a lie. If you’ve stumbled, confess it, get back up, and keep moving forward. God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23), which means every day is a fresh start.
A Life of Surrender and Dependence
The key to long-term faithfulness is not just making commitments but learning to depend on God daily. True victory comes when you realize that you can’t do it alone, but God can do it through you. That’s why total surrender and total dependence are so important.
“Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
Psalm 37:5
Did you catch that? You commit, you trust, and He brings it to pass. God is the one who works in you to fulfill His will. Your job is to surrender and rely on Him.
Your Commitment Still Matters
If you’ve fallen short of your spiritual commitments, don’t let that stop you. Every time you turn back to God and realign your life with His will, you grow. Instead of focusing on your failures, focus on the direction you’re heading.
Decisions matter. Even if you don’t follow through perfectly, a sincere commitment can change the course of your life. So don’t give up. Keep surrendering to the Lord, keep depending on Him, and trust that He will help you grow into the person He wants you to be.
