Fear—it’s something we all experience. Whether it’s the moment your heart pounds after nearly getting into an accident, or the uncertainty of receiving bad news from the doctor, fear is a natural response to intimidating circumstances. But while some fears are healthy, such as fearing God or recognizing danger, many fears are entirely inappropriate. And these are the fears that can hold us back from obeying God.
The Fear Factor: A Battle Between Faith and Fear
Have you ever been in a moment where you knew God wanted you to do something, but fear stepped in and shut you down? Maybe you felt the Holy Spirit prompting you to speak up for Christ in a conversation, but instead, you kept silent. Maybe you sensed the need to take a stand in your school or youth group, but the fear of rejection held you back.
That’s the fear factor at work. It’s the force that makes you hesitate, back down, or stay quiet when God calls you to be bold. And it’s exactly what the apostle Paul faced in Acts 18.
Paul was in Corinth, preaching the gospel. As usual, people were being saved—but others were getting angry. Persecution was rising, and it was in this moment that Jesus spoke to him in a vision, saying:
“Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: for I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.” (Acts 18:9-10)
Jesus made it clear: Paul had two choices. He could let fear take over, stay silent, and hold back. Or he could trust God, speak boldly, and move forward.
The same is true for you. Fear will always try to keep you from fulfilling God’s purpose. But when faith takes over, the fear factor loses its grip.
Three Reasons You Don’t Have to Fear
Jesus gave Paul three powerful reasons why he didn’t have to fear—truths that apply just as much to us today.
1. God’s Presence
Jesus told Paul, “I am with thee.” That changes everything! No matter how alone you may feel, you never truly are.
Maybe you’re the only one in your youth group who is serious about following Christ. Maybe no one else in your church seems passionate about living a surrendered life. It can feel lonely, but the truth is, God’s presence is with you. And if He is with you, what is there to fear?
2. God’s Protection
Jesus also said, “No man shall set on thee to hurt thee.” This doesn’t mean nothing bad will ever happen, but it does mean that nothing can touch you outside of God’s control.
Some people think following God’s will is dangerous, but the safest place in the world is the center of God’s will. If He calls someone to be a missionary in a dangerous country, the safest thing they can do is obey. To disobey would actually be the most dangerous choice.
You don’t have to be afraid of what people will think when you stand for Christ. You don’t have to fear persecution. God is in control, and He will protect His children.
3. God’s Plan
The last thing Jesus told Paul was, “For I have much people in this city.” Paul had already seen people saved, but God was telling him, “You haven’t seen anything yet! I have a great work to do in this city.”
Fear makes us focus on ourselves—what people will think of us, how uncomfortable we might feel, what we might lose. But faith lifts our eyes to something greater: God’s plan. He is always at work, drawing people to Himself. If we let fear control us, we will miss out on seeing Him do something incredible.
God wants to use you to reach people, but if fear keeps you silent, you will never see the impact He wants to make through you.
Defeating the Fear Factor
Fear and faith cannot coexist. One will always win. So the question is: Which one will you choose?
Every time fear tries to stop you, remember these three truths:
- You are not alone—God is with you.
- You don’t have to fear—God will protect you.
- You have a purpose—God has a bigger plan than you can see.
The fear factor will always try to keep you from stepping forward in faith. But when you believe God’s promises, take bold steps of obedience, and refuse to back down, fear loses and faith wins.
Don’t let fear silence you. Trust God. Speak boldly. And watch as He does the impossible in your life.
