Jim Van Gelderen: Welcome to the Thee Generation Podcast. This is Jim Van Gelderen broadcasting from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. If you were with us last week, you may remember that we began to deal with the subject of Romans chapter six.
The great Magna Carta of the Christian life. How to live a life that is free from sin. In other words, we’re always going to battle the temptation of sin to the day we die.
But God has made a way of escape. Every time you’re tempted, there’s a way out. And Romans chapter six, I believe, is a part of that way of escape, so that each time you’re tempted, you don’t just have to throw your hands up in resignation and say, well, I got a sin.
I can’t overcome the temptations too strong, which is not true. Uh, first Corinthians ten thirteen tells us there is a way of escape. Last week we dealt with the fact that when you got saved, the Bible says you were baptized or immersed into Jesus so that a union occurred with Jesus Christ.
And that union means you’re part of his death, burial, and resurrection. Now, last week we mentioned that this week we’re going to talk about the two great possibilities that occur or are there because of that union with Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. The first one is found in verse four of Romans chapter six.
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death. That like that baptism is that immersion into Jesus. That’s of course illustrated by baptism, water baptism.
That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. In the Greek language in which the Bible was written, there’s something called a subjunctive. A subjunctive mood.
And it’s the mood of possibility. It’s found twice in this passage, in the early verses, when the Bible is talking about you got to know the right facts. And of course the right facts are when you got saved, you were put into Jesus, into his death, his burial, his resurrection, his history, if you will.
And that brings us to glorious possibilities. One is that we should walk in newness of life. That means the resurrection of Jesus Christ means that you are in that which means, young person.
You have a wonderful possibility of walking on planet earth, enabled, energized, strengthened by divine life. In other words, capital D, capital L or resurrected life capital R, capital L. In other words, Jesus Christ, who is the resurrected one who lives in you.
What a possibility, friends. Every one of you that is saved listening to me. Jesus Christ.
He wants you to walk in newness of life, but he’s not telling you to do something by your own strength. You can’t in your own strength, but the resurrected life lives in you and he can enable you. He can strengthen you.
You can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth you. What a wondrous possibility based on his resurrection. But verse number six says there’s another possibility, knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed.
There it is. That’s that possibility. That’s subjunctive mood, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Now what does it mean? The body of sin might be destroyed? Now, there is a little bit of a debate on what the body of sin means.
I’m not sure that the interpretation makes a huge difference, but I favor more the minority view. That body there is not talking about the human body, but body in the way we would use body of truth. I believe in the book of Colossians, body is used in that way.
So body of sin would then be everything out there that is sin. Now might be destroyed. Uh, the word destroyed there is not destroyed in the sense of obliterate.
It’s destroy in the sense of render.
