If you have your own unique story of gospel advance or if you sense God leading you toward a particular people group, we’d love to hear about it. Even if it’s just a sentence or two, share what God is doing in an email to gomission@theegeneration.org.
GoMission, hosted by Mark Gillmore, is a monthly, missions-focused program designed to expose young people to the people, stories, and opportunities happening across the globe in the world’s harvest fields.
Mark Gillmore: Hello and welcome to the GoMission podcast. I’m Mark Gillmore, missions traveler and trainer.
Luke chapter 10 is an awesome passage. One of my favorites when it comes to the GoMission. In this passage, Jesus appoints 70. It says He sends them out “two [by] two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.”
What a great reminder, that when we step out to enter into a new place or perhaps into a new relationship, that allows Jesus Himself to show up. We often feel weak, but the Lord needs us to step into this place or into this relationship so that He can show His strength. And when we step out, He shows up.
Just recently in August, we were able to have a GoMission Disciple Training Conference in Cameroon, West Africa, led by our partner Pastor Ernest. And they simply trained every believer present how to go make disciples and see churches multiplying throughout that region there of West Africa.
There were two young men who were part of that training conference, and I was so thrilled to hear about their immediate obedience and application to the training they received. One was named Bashiru and the other Roland, and they went off to a couple villages that they knew there was someone there who was a person of peace, who wanted to receive more Bible knowledge and Gospel message. So they went to a village called Chanas, and they ended up ministering in another village as well, Mbankouop, and they saw 11 saved in one, 2 saved in another. And they really saw some amazing things happen as people received the Gospel with joy.
There was one lady, she almost cried when she discovered the wages of sin, and after her salvation she had the desire to reach the whole world. She’s a nursing student, and they were returning, continuing to disciple her.
There was another young man, who when he heard it said, “I’m going to share the gospel to five of my family members before we meet next.” And so they were immediately giving the Gospel and teaching others to take responsibility to share it to their family and their friends.
There was one man who, as they were speaking or as he heard that they were in the area, he came from a quarter or a village about 45 minutes trek away. And he pled with them. He said, “We need God on our side. Would you please come here also?” I’m not even sure they had time to get there, but it just showed that when you step out, God can lead you to others, and the disciple-making and the Gospel can spread from one village to the next.
Just recently, we had our Thee Generation Youth Summit, and I know probably many of you listening were there, and many of you listening were not there. And in the session that I had, I just desired to equip the young people for the GoMission.
You see, the GoMission exists to train ordinary believers to multiply and then make disciples and even plant churches everywhere, especially in their home regions. And every one of us can be on the GoMission.
And I equipped each one of the young persons with this conversation. A simple conversation to get to the Gospel among your family and friends. And I want to review that conversation and give every one of you the challenge to start a conversation and turn it to the Gospel using this simple bridge, really the bridge news, that the Gospel isーthis bridge, that isーthe Gospel is good news.
And it begins with just this statement: “I have some really good news to share with you. Can I ask you a question? If you were to die right now, or five years from now, are you 100% sure that all of your sinsーpast, present, and futureーare forgiven and that you have eternal life?” That is an attention-getting question that shows some of the urgency of this matter of their eternity. Most folks want to go to Heaven, but they’re not sure.
Immediately follow up that first question with a second question, and that is: “What do you think you must depend on to receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life? …Anything else?” Normally the answer to that question is: “Well, you gotta keep the 10 commandments. You gotta do good works. You gotta go to church. You gotta be baptized.”ーsome matter of either moral works or religious works. And, of course, people aren’t sure.
After they give you those answers, then begin to just give your own testimony: “You know, I was uncertain myself once. And when someone showed me the Bible answer, it changed everything. There was a time in my life, I was thinking, I wasn’t sure my sins were forgiven. I didn’t know where I would go when I died. I finally found out the Bible answer, and now I have peace, and I know I have eternal life. In fact, the Bible says, ‘These things have I written unto you that ye may know that ye have eternal life.’ I am so glad that God has given us this answer to life’s greatest question. May I show you how you can know 100% sure that you have eternal life?”
There’s the simple conversation, and I challenge you to use it. And then there’s one other tool that we gave out at the Youth Summit that I want to tell you how you can pick up. It’s called “Discover How to Have Eternal Life,” and it’s a Gospel presentation pamphlet. You can purchase these online at a website called revivalfocus.org. And thatーthose key questions, that quotation from the Bible there in 1 John 5:13, are part of this pamphlet.
You will actually be able to read those key questions to the person you’re speaking to very easily when you have this pamphlet in hand. So I encourage you to equip yourself with this Gospel bridge, this good news conversation bridge, and with this “How to Have Eternal Life” presentation pamphlet, and then obeyーjust like these two young men Bashiru and Roland. Literally the next week after their training conference, they obeyed.
Some of you at the youth summit… This is the next week! Have you obeyed yet? Don’t delay. The moment that you obey, God will be able to show up.
I want to ask you to pray for two matters that are related to the GoMission. Coming up here in November, my wife and I are traveling to Uganda for a GoMission training conference. And then in January, we’re also traveling back to Cameroon for also, another GoMission training conference. Would you pray for us? We’re asking God to enable us to train ordinary believers to multiply churches across these regions.
In Uganda, there’s a region of a thousand villages that really have demonstrated openness to the Gospel, but people need to train, be trained, and sent into those villages. The same thing in Cameroon… the door is wide open. Maybe God would lay on your heart the interest in a trip like that. If so, I would love to hear about that. We’re at different times putting together some trips to some of these regions.
Maybe God would be calling you to be part of the GoMission to some region of the world. So pray for these opportunities, and keep in mind that the only way to stay at peace in a world of turmoil and uncertainty is to stay on-mission with Jesus in His GoMission.
